Tenerife, Canary Islands

Our second port was Tenerife. What a beautiful island. We decided to walk to the port after taking the shuttle to the drop-off point.  Boy, I felt like I was back in Seattle. Everything was uphill and it was about half a mile to shopping. Again, so I thought. No little shops were open and many of the food places were either closed or opened later. We ended up walking about a mile and a half to a Market. So I was very excited to see the market. Not anything I was expecting. Most of the market was a fresh meat market. Being that I was on a ship and they cooked my meals for 2 weeks, a meat market wouldn't be beneficial to me. We did find one little bake shop. Had baklava. Yep, I was in the Canary Islands and had Greek baklava. Everything else needed to be cooked. (See my blog Spanish Part Dos for the story on baklava)

We walked another mile, maybe, to the mall. Again, nothing I was expecting. At the bottom of the mall was a grocery store. Nothing I needed. Went up the escalator to find shopping and I was stunned. This little box of a mall, store, looked like it was as big as Lazarus downtown. (For my non-Columbus peeps, it was a 3-level store that no longer exists) So we took the escalator, floors 2, 3, 4, what the heck? 5, 6, 7. 7 floors and we just wanted, at this point, to see how many floors. We were looking for lunch, Paella. At the top, the 7th floor was a cafeteria. I refused to come to the Canary Islands and eat in a cafeteria. We rode the escalator down to floor 1. We talked, I stomped my foot, and we rode the escalator back up to floor 7. To the Cafeteria.

In the United States, a cafeteria is like a buffet except you purchase the items individually instead of a 1 price for all you can eat. Stomping my foot didn't get me anywhere except eating in a cafeteria that I ended up liking. We had 3 more hours in La Palma and I was hungry. We walked in, and my mind was changed. Wow, such an upscale restaurant/cafeteria!  The staff was patient and friendly and they put napkins on your table by using 2 spoons! No kidding! I am not sure I could do it. Literally do not touch the napkins with their hands at all!  Now, we ordered burgers because I was hungry and didn't want to take time to Google every item, and burgers were safe. Instead of bread as a starter, they gave us a small cup, a very small cup, of freshly made potato chips. That was a change and they were good.

Those were the best burgers! So good! Spain doesn't have a diet anything. They have Coca-Cola light. You order it and it always comes with a lemon or lime slice. Fries came with the burger. Mine also came with an over-medium egg.

Well, we never got to shop but we had to take a cab to get back to the ship. We ended up walking 3 1/2 miles that day but saw so much! Beautiful area that I would like to visit again.
